Its Christmas Day and Julie and decided to rent a car and drive to the Twelve Apostles.
The Twelve Apostles are located on the Great Ocean Road which runs along the Southern Australia coast between a town called Geelong going West to Warrnambool.
The road winds along the coastline and reminded me very much of Route 1 in California.
As we were driving along Julie and I were discussing what would be the quintessential Australian experience so we determined that it would include The Twelve Apostles, seeing a koala bear, a kangaroo, eating a meat pie and a Tim-Tam. I had already had some vegemite so I already had a check mark in that box. Vegemite is yeast extract typically spread in a very thin layer on toast. The nearest thing I can think of to describe it as eating a paste that tastes like a boullion cube or soup in paste form - its very salty. I am afraid I am not a fan. Anyway, as we were driving along the Great Ocean Road with eucalyptus trees on both sides amazingly what do we see but koala bears in the trees!! There were several sitting in various trees some even with babies clutched to them. I took several pics but these were the best - where they looked like more than just blobs in the trees.
We stopped for lunch in a very cute little town called Lorne where miraculously there were some places open. We bought some Tim-Tams which are these chocolate covered cookies - yum - check in that box. No meat pies though.
We continued driving, not quite sure where the Twelve Apostles were along the road and we had been driving for a few hours, finally in the Port Campbell area we saw a mass of cars and a big parking. There they were!
That was so worth the trip and on Christmas Day no less!
